Bonebreaker

Medium: Watercolor on cold-press Fabriano, 8 X 10 inches.
Original: Not Available

I painted this as a gift for my friend, Jennifer Campbell-Smith. For a while she's been urging me
to paint a Lammergeier, and I've always meant to. Lammergeiers (also known as Bearded Vultures)
are amazing birds. They pick up bones and drop them onto stones to smash them open. This sounds
easier than it actually is, and it it takes years for birds to perfect this technique! They break them
open to get the marrow inside, and will also eat bone shards. Their stomachs, with a pH of around 1,
dissolve the bones in about a day!
