The bounty for magpies in the 1940's was two cents a head. Hundreds of thousands of magpies were killed and turned in for money, because these birds were considered predatory and thus needed to be controled.
To this day, coyotes are still shot, trapped, and poisoned. Seeing dead coyotes tied or impaled to fences is not an uncommon sight in the western United States.
This is a piece for all the outcasts. For all the 'pests' and 'vermin' of the world, whose beauty is ignored and are seen only for their negative impact on the human world. Their angel is not dazzlingly beautiful. She is dull and thin. Dandelions adorn her hair and only brambles offer their embrace. She can perform no miracles. Her only offering is open arms and a wing that isn't bound by barbed wire.
